The original single fronted single storey brick Edwardian bungalow and subsequent ‘80’s renovations showed no consideration for aspect and orientation with the main living areas at the rear having virtually no direct north light.
The extension rectifies this with a northeast-facing courtyard to the new living areas that provide amenity and excellent sun penetration to the main living space and kitchen, which is controlled both passively and actively.
The dining room has two double glazed sets of concertina doors that, when open make the entire living area flow from the courtyard through to the backyard.
The rear flat roof form steps up, framing the canopies of adjacent trees through the highlight windows and then wraps around, following the line of the existing roof to frame a view of the backyard.
A northward pointing blade wall projects into the courtyard to provide a sculptural element that follows the path of the sun with its shadows and to reflect light back into the body of the house.
This project is under construction and is due for completion early 2006.
